Dubai is a high-tech metropolis that is embracing the digital future. The Internet is not only available here, it is an important part of the city's infrastructure.
High speeds, wide coverage and cutting-edge technology make online life convenient for locals and tourists alike. In this blog, we look at the key aspects of using the internet in Dubai, from ISPs to prices and connectivity features.
The main internet providers in Dubai
Several major providers are operating in Dubai, offering a wide range of internet services:
- Etisalat is the largest telecom operator in the UAE, offering both mobile and fixed internet. It is known for its high speed and connection stability.
- du is the second largest operator and competes with Etisalat on price and quality of service.
- Virgin Mobile is a virtual operator that uses du's infrastructure and offers flexible tariffs.
Mobile Internet in Dubai
Mobile internet in Dubai is fast and reliable thanks to 4G and 5G networks. On average, mobile internet speeds in Dubai reach 150-300 Mbps, making it one of the fastest in the world. Mobile internet prices vary depending on the operator and plan. For example, 1 GB of mobile internet for 7 days costs around 50 dirhams (about $13). Unlimited internet for a month starts at AED 500 (about $135). Special SIM cards with internet packages are available for tourists, such as Etisalat's Tourist SIM or du, with different data options and validity periods.
Home Internet
Home internet in Dubai is available via fibre optic networks with high data speeds. Average speeds range from 100Mbps to 1Gbps. In terms of pricing, 100Mbps internet costs around AED 300 ($82) per month, 500Mbps costs around AED 600 ($165) and 1Gbps costs over AED 1,000 ($275).
Free Wi-Fi
Dubai is actively developing a system of free Wi-Fi in public places. To date, it is possible to use the internet for free in
at metro, bus and tram stops
- Shopping malls (e.g. Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and others);
- in tourist areas (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, La Mer);
- Free high-speed internet is available at airports.
However, be aware that in some places Wi-Fi access is time-limited or requires authorisation via SMS.
Limitations and peculiarities
Dubai, like the rest of the UAE, has strict laws governing the Internet space. In particular, there is a ban on VoIP calls in the city. Popular services such as WhatsApp, Skype and FaceTime are blocked for voice and video calls. Local apps such as BOTIM and C'Me are used for communication, and the country also has an official censorship law that controls both content and the way users communicate.
Access to sites with 'unacceptable' content (gambling, pornography, extremism) is blocked. Dating sites and apps are also banned in the UAE. Some social networking sites are also banned. Although VPN services are not banned for private use, their illegal use (e.g. to circumvent blockages) can lead to fines. The safest way to get around blockages in Dubai is not to circumvent them, but to use authorised services such as Zoom or Google Meets.
Internet in Dubai is fast, reliable and modern, providing a comfortable environment for work, socialising and entertainment. However, due to restrictions on VoIP calls and content filtering, tourists should prepare in advance and familiarise themselves with local internet regulations. Nevertheless, technological developments and government initiatives are making Dubai one of the most advanced cities in the world in terms of digitalisation.
