Population of the UAE and Dubai

The United Arab Emirates is a country that has undergone an astonishing transformation, from desert landscapes and small fishing villages to glittering skyscrapers and world-class megacities. At the heart of this impressive transformation is its people - a colourful mix of indigenous and immigrant populations that largely define the country's cultural, economic and social landscape.

Total population and demographics

By 2024, the population of the UAE will have increased by approximately 200,593 people or 1.89%. Today, the total number of people living in the country exceeds 10 million, of which approximately 90% are expatriates. This astonishing statistic makes the country one of the most internationalised in the world. There are significantly more men than women in the country, about 69% versus 31%, due to the large number of migrant workers in the construction and service industries. Given that the UAE covers an area of 83.6 thousand km2, the population density is 129.2 people per 1 km2. At the same time, if we look by age, the UAE is home to:

  1. 2,205,107 people under the age of 15. Of these: 1,128,089 males and 1,077,018 females.
  2. 8,492,520 people aged over 14 but under 65. Of which: 6,226,192 men and 2,266,327 women.
  3. 99,550 people aged 64 and over. Of which: 63,811 men and 35,739 women.

The average life expectancy at birth (for both sexes) in the UAE is 76.5 years. This is higher than the average life expectancy in the world, which is around 71 years. Meanwhile, men live to an average age of 73.9 years and women to an average age of 79.2 years.

Among the emirates, Dubai is the most densely populated, with a population of around 3.7 million, and this number continues to grow due to the constant influx of expats and tourists.

Locals and expats: a unique balance

The UAE's indigenous people, known as Emiratis, make up only a small percentage of the population. They play an important role in the political and economic life of the country, holding key government positions and running major business organisations. At the same time, most jobs in the services, construction, tourism and finance sectors are held by expatriate professionals and workers.

Expats in the UAE represent more than 200 nationalities, with particularly large numbers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Egypt, the UK and other countries. This creates a unique cultural mosaic where different traditions, cuisines, languages and customs coexist.

Dubai - city without borders

Dubai can be described as a 'global city' in every sense of the word. It is a centre of business, tourism and innovation that attracts people from all over the world. Arabic is the official language, but English dominates everyday life, making it a comfortable place for expats to live and work.

Unlike traditional metropolises, Dubai is not just adapting to globalisation - it is shaping it. The desire for progress is reflected in the development of smart technologies, ecology and urbanism. Projects are being implemented to improve the quality of life, such as building smart neighbourhoods, expanding the transport network and investing in green energy.

Dynamic growth and urbanisation

By the end of 2024, Dubai will be home to 3.825 million people. The population increased by 169,000 people over the course of the year, a record increase since 2018. This was fuelled by:

  1. Major construction projects: the metropolis continues to expand, creating new residential and commercial districts.
  2. Economic development: tax-free regime, innovation and favourable business conditions are attracting more and more investors.
  3. Attractive living conditions: High levels of security, modern medical and educational facilities make Dubai one of the best cities in which to live and work.

The impact of population growth on the economy and infrastructure

The rapid population growth in Dubai and the UAE as a whole is having a significant impact on the country's economy. Demand for housing, transport, healthcare and education is increasing. The public and private sectors are being given new opportunities for development, but the infrastructure is under increasing strain. Key challenges associated with population growth include:

  1. Increased pressure on the transport system
  2. Increased demand for housing, affecting property prices
  3. Expansion of education and healthcare facilities

However, the UAE is successfully adapting to these challenges by implementing innovative solutions in urban planning, construction and transport.

The future: where is Dubai heading?

Dubai continues to evolve and set ambitious goals. By 2040, the city's population is expected to grow to 5.8 million, requiring infrastructure expansion and environmental improvements.

Projects such as the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan aim to create more comfortable living conditions, develop green areas and introduce sustainable technologies. The authorities are also actively attracting highly skilled professionals in science, IT and medicine by granting them long-term visas and residency permits.

The people of the UAE and Dubai are a prime example of how different cultures can coexist in one place, united by common goals and a desire to succeed. As one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Dubai continues to be a symbol of progress, opportunity and diversity. An even brighter future lies ahead, where tradition and innovation go hand in hand to create a unique and inspiring image of modern civilisation.
