Why do they constantly change the names of metro stations in Dubai?

Dubai has long been known as a city of innovation, investment, and commerce. Even its public transportation system is organized in a unique way. The Dubai Metro is not only the world's largest automated and driverless metro system; it is also one of the most unique transportation networks. Its stations serve not only a transportation function but also an advertising one.

If you visit Dubai often, you may have noticed that some metro stations change their names from time to time. For example, yesterday you might have gotten on the train at Al Khail, but today, the same station is called Al Fardan Exchange. This renaming occurs regularly, and it is not the result of chaos, but rather a well-thought-out strategy of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Why is this happening? Who makes the decisions about changing names? How does this affect passengers, businesses, and the city itself? Let's take a closer look.

Why does Dubai need this?

The idea of selling naming rights for metro stations first emerged in 2009 when the RTA introduced a unique program. The program's main goal is to develop partnerships between the state and businesses. The concept is straightforward: private companies have the opportunity to purchase naming rights to a station and transform it into an advertising platform. Since the metro carries hundreds of thousands of passengers daily, branding on the metro map is a unique promotional opportunity. A station name is more than just a sign. It appears on maps, in navigation systems, in announcements inside trains, on tickets, and in mobile applications.

In turn, the RTA receives funding for infrastructure development and maintenance without placing an additional burden on the budget. This is essentially one of the most ambitious advertising strategies in the region. This practice exists in many megacities around the world, but Dubai is unique in that it has incorporated it into its long-term strategy, transforming transportation into a commercially profitable tool.

Now, a little about the metro network itself

To understand its scale, consider the numbers. Today, the Dubai Metro is the world's largest automated, fully driverless metro system. It includes two lines: The Red Line has 35 stations, and the Green Line has 20 stations, as well as nine underground stops.

The Red Line connects major locations in the city, including the airport, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, and Expo City. The Green Line connects historic Dubai with its markets and business districts. Additionally, the metro is integrated with the tram network and buses, forming the backbone of the city's public transportation system.

The network is expected to expand significantly in the coming years. By 2029, the Blue Line, which will have 14 new stations, is expected to be operational. It will connect Dubai International Airport with the Mirdif, International City, Silicon Oasis, and Dubai Festival City areas. This expansion will stimulate the development of the transportation system and likely lead to more contracts for selling naming rights.

New station names were announced in 2025

In 2025, the RTA announced a new wave of renaming. For instance, the GGICO station became the Al Garhoud Metro Station, the UAE Exchange station became the Life Pharmacy Metro Station, and the Jebel Ali station became the National Paints Metro Station.

Changes also continued at existing hubs: Al Khail became Al Fardan Exchange Metro Station and Mashreq became Insurance Market.ae Metro Station.

Such changes occur almost every year, and Dubai residents are accustomed to the metro map being updated. However, tourists sometimes get lost because the old names appear in guidebooks and on old maps. Official maps and announcements in the trains are gradually being updated to reinforce the new names.

Why Dubai?

Many cities around the world have stations named after corporations or brands, but in Dubai, this practice has become part of a systematic approach. There are several reasons for this:

  1. First, the city's innovative spirit. Dubai always strives to implement non-standard solutions and set trends, including in the field of transportation.
  2. It is attractive for business. International corporations are concentrated here and are ready to invest in advertising in the most prominent locations.
  3. Financial benefit: Income from station naming rights sales goes toward metro development and maintenance, reducing the burden on the city budget.

Essentially, the Dubai Metro has become a transportation system and a platform for commerce.

Despite the confusion caused by the name changes, they also have a positive effect. Thanks to partnerships, the RTA receives funding to improve service, and passengers get a modern transportation system.

The Dubai Metro is more than just a means of transportation. It reflects a city's philosophy where everything is built on a combination of comfort, innovation, and commercial opportunities. The frequent renaming of stations is part of this philosophy. For businesses, it is an opportunity to be seen by millions of passengers daily. For Dubai, it is an investment in the future. For tourists, it is an unusual experience that reminds them that even the transportation system in this city operates according to its own rules.

So, if you find yourself in Dubai again and notice a new name for a familiar station, know that it's not an accident but part of a metropolis's global strategy that always looks ahead.
