Dubai is launching a major project to build new transport infrastructure. This will completely change the way people get around the city.
The aim is to cut travel times, make it easier to get around, and make the city comfortable and environmentally friendly for the 8 million people who will be living there in the future.
The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, recently looked at the latest plans and agreed to the transport plan for 2025-2027. The programme is ambitious and covers 57 infrastructure projects. It includes the construction of:
- 226 kilometres of new motorways have been built.
- 115 bridges and tunnels,
- Eight sets of roads going up and down, and 11 sets of roads going side to side. These are being made better on key streets such as UMMS Al Qudra, Hessa Street and Al Fay Road.
The project is being done in three phases to make it go faster. As part of the big plan, the city will also create 13.5 kilometres of new cycle routes and eco-roads, from Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills. It includes two 5-metre bridges over Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail. There will be special lanes for bicycles, electric scooters and people walking.
Sheikh Hamdan also confirmed plans to launch self-driving taxis. The project will start in 2026 with three international companies. The plans for the first stage are as follows:
- Sixty transport units will be sent out to collect data.
- There are 65 target zones, and the top priority for each one is safety and accessibility.
This is part of a big plan to get more people to use transport like cars and trains that don't need a driver. The plan is to get 10% of all journeys to be done like this by 2030.
The Al Barsha 2 neighbourhood will be the first to have key facilities (schools, parks, hospitals, shops) that people will be able to get to within 20 minutes on foot or by bike.
Features:
- 17 kilometres of paths for cycling and walking;
- Here are some links to Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Hills and Jumeirah Beach.
- There are three new public spaces.
- 590 trees will be planted, and there will be shaded seating areas.
- There are also bicycle stations and smart seating.
Dubai is becoming a city of the future where speed, comfort, technology and ecology all work together. The city is becoming a transport hub and a world leader in smart, sustainable and people-centred mobility.
